Conference Finals Predictions

May 09, 2008

It will be a battle of contrasting styles in the Conference Finals. The Red Wings and Penguins play offensive puck-possession games while their opponents (Stars and Flyers) prefer to play a defensive crash and banging style to create turnovers.

It should be an interesting to watch the different styles and who will advance to the Cup finals, the beauties or the beasts.

Here are my picks for the Conference Finals;

Western Conference

Detroit Red Wings (1) vs. Dallas Stars (4)

( Detroit in seven games)

  • This one is going the distance. The Stars just need to get a game under their belt and they will bounce back. The only problem is that the Wings have too much talent upfront and on the backend. In goal it has to be a draw. Osgood hasn’t had too handle as much rubber as Turco (180 SA vs. 354 SA) but he has been almost perfect and has not lost a game since replacing ‘the Dominator’ in Game 5 of the 1st round.

Eastern Conference

Pittsburgh Penguins (2) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (6)

( Pittsburgh in six games)

  • The loss of Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen to injury cannot be understated. It is absolutely huge and will be a large contributing factor to their playoff demise. The Pens are loaded with firepower on the first three lines and will be too much for a slow Philly defense to overcome. Marty Biron will have to be even better than he was against the Habs to pull this one out.
