Buffalo Sabres
A California state appeals court has upheld a US$26-million award in a fraud lawsuit against the owner of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and a company he founded.
The court in Los Angeles affirmed previous jury verdicts against Tom Golisano, Rapid Payroll Inc. and others on Tuesday.
Atlanta Thrashers
The Atlanta Thrashers have a newcomer in 48-year-old defenceman Chris Chelios, an 11-time all-star.
Chelios has played in more games than any other American-born NHL player, and he joins the Thrashers after getting five goals and 17 assists in 46 games with Chicago of the AHL. The team recalled Chelios on Wednesday.
The Thrashers are looking for Chelios to provide a spark and help snap a three-game losing streak. Atlanta plays at Columbus on Thursday night.
NHL Hype
The NHL decided to not punish Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke for his hit on Boston's Marc Savard.
Savard suffered a concussion and had to be removed on a stretcher after a check from Cooke on Sunday night. Savard briefly lost consciousness and there has been no official word on when he will return to action.
League disciplinarian Colin Campbell said the decision was based on consistency.
Buffalo Sabres
As tall as he is, Tyler Myers' stock on the Buffalo Sabres grew even larger after the rookie defenceman enjoyed a career-best performance.
At six-foot-eight, Myers had a goal and three assists to spark the Sabres' sluggish offence in a 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. Aside from helping Buffalo score five goals for the first time in 18 games, the rookie of the year candidate helped the team regain the top spot in the Northeast Division.
Vancouver Canucks
Daniel and Henrik Sedin are donating $1.5 million to help build a new children's hospital in Vancouver.
The Swedish twins, who were drafted by the Canucks and have lived in Vancouver for 10 years, said their donation will be used to help build the intensive care unit and diagnostics and imaging area at the new BC Children's Hospital.
"Henrik and I along with our families feel very fortunate to live and work in this great city and province," Daniel Sedin said in a statement.
Phoenix Coyotes
Adrian Aucoin beat Andrew Raycroft in a shootout with a little help from Phoenix backup goalie Jason LaBarbera.
Aucoin scored in the sixth round of a shootout, and Ilya Bryzgalov deflected Mason Raymond's final attempt for Vancouver high over the net to give the Coyotes a 4-3 victory over the Canucks on Wednesday night.
NHLPA Hype
The National Hockey League Players' Association has tied up another loose end by reaching a resolution with Ian Penny, its former general counsel and interim executive director.
"The parties have resolved all matters regarding Ian Penny's employment with the National Hockey League Players' Association," the NHLPA said in a brief statement Wednesday.
Olympic Hype
The star forward's overtime goal lifted Canada to a 3-2 win over the Americans in the gold-medal game last month.
