Carolina Hurricanes

After playing only a few minutes since before Christmas, Manny Legace wasn't going to let a scare in pre-game warmups force him out.

Jussi Jokinen snapped a third-period tie and added an assist, and backup Legace made 28 saves after taking a slapshot to the throat before the game even began in the Carolina Hurricanes' 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

Nashville Predators

Right wing Jordin Tootoo has signed a two-year, US$2.5 million extension with the Nashville Predators.

Tootoo will earn $1.15 million next season and $1.35 million in 2011-12.

Phoenix Coyotes

An unlikely duo helped the Phoenix Coyotes extend their winning streak to a season-high six games.

Stay-at-home defenceman Adrian Aucoin scored the deciding goal in the shootout for the second straight game to give Phoenix a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Meanwhile, backup goalie Jason LaBarbera made 28 saves through overtime, then stopped two of three Blackhawks in the shootout in his ninth start and 12th appearance this season.

Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals are getting great goaltending and explosive offence. It's a combination no one has been able to stop.

The Capitals' team-record winning streak stands at 13 games after a 5-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday night.

New Jersey Devils

Ilya Kovalchuk's debut with the New Jersey Devils had a storybook ending, except journeyman Jay Pandolfo provided the big goal instead of the high-scoring Russian.

Pandolfo capped a three-goal outburst in the final 3:04 and the Devils welcomed Kovalchuk by rallying for a 4-3 victory over the stunned Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The youngest son of Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has died in a car crash.

The team said 21-year-old Brendan Burke was fatally injured in an accident Friday in Wayne County, Indiana. Police told a Daytona, Ohio television station a black jeep lost control in poor weather and slid into oncoming traffic, hitting another vehicle head on and killing Burke as well as 18-year-old Mark Reedy.

Brendan Burke made headlines in November after he discussed being gay in an ESPN.com story.
