Ottawa Senators

It wasn't quite up to all-star game levels, but the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals did their best to take defence out of hockey Thursday night.

Jason Spezza had a goal and two assists for Ottawa an Alexander Semin had a hat trick for Washington and the Senators were able to outlast the Capitals 6-5 in an old-fashioned shootout at Scotiabank Place.

Vancouver Canucks

Roberto Luongo joked that he played the angles perfectly after the goal-starved Florida Panthers hit six posts.

Luongo made 31 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and Alex Burrows and Jannik Hansen scored second-period goals in the Vancouver Canucks' 3-0 victory over the Panthers on Thursday night.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers have traded centre Dominic Moore to the Montreal Canadiens for a second-round draft pick in 2011.

Moore, signed by the Panthers as a free agent after the start of the 2009-10 season, had eight goals and nine assists in 48 games for Florida.

Boston Bruins

When you've struggled like the Boston Bruins have lately, any win is a good one.

"Two points are so valuable right now," coach Claude Julien said Thursday night after the Bruins nearly blew a five-goal lead before hanging on for a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks finally beat the Detroit Red Wings.

Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal in a shootout to give San Jose a 3-2 victory over Detroit on Thursday night. Evgeni Nabokov made a career-high 50 saves, and Joe Thornton and Dwight Helminen scored in regulation for the Sharks. It was Western Conference-leading San Jose's first win over Detroit this after three losses this season.

Dallas Stars

After the game, Brenden Morrow could only look back on it and laugh.

The Dallas Stars winger overcame scoring on his net to set up the tying and go-ahead goals Thursday night as the Dallas Stars got two goals from Mike Ribeiro in a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.

"We can laugh about it now but what an embarrassing feeling," said Morrow.

St. Louis Blues

The Blues acquired defenseman Nate Guenin from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Steve Wagner.

NHL Hype

Former Chicago Blackhawks star Chris Chelios won a key legal victory Wednesday that likely means the DUI charge against him will be dismissed, according to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The report indicates police did not have probable cause to arrest Chelios after a Dec. 28 traffic stop. DuPage County Judge Cary Pierce made the ruling after viewing a 15-minute police videotape showing the traffic stop and sobriety tests that led to the DUI charge.

Edmonton Oilers

After nine consecutive wins in shootouts, the Los Angeles Kings were due. So were the Edmonton Oilers, after a franchise-record 11 straight road losses.

Lubomir Visnovsky scored in the 10th round of the tiebreaker after Edmonton blew a two-goal lead in the third period, and the league-worst Oilers stole a point from the playoff-contending Kings with a 3-2 victory Thursday night.
